Nikolaos Karousis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1971. He received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry in 1995 and his Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry in 2003, at University of Ioannina, Greece, with Prof. G. Varvounis, working on the synthesis of 1-aroyl- and 1-aroylmethylenepyrroles as potential intermediates of the pyrrolobenzodiazepine and pyrrolobenzodiazocin group of antitumor antibiotics. During the years 2004 and 2005, he worked on the same research field, as a postdoctoral fellow on a “Pythagoras” research project, financially supported from the Greek General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GSRT). In 2006, he joined the CNSLab group at Theoretical and Physical Chemistry Institute (TPCI) in National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), and was introduced in the chemistry of carbon nanostructured materials. His current research interests lie on chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes and carbon nanohorns for nanotechnological applications.
